Conflict between orthodox and Catholics
Catholicism and Orthodox have been thought to be the exact same religion, although they were once under the same church, there are a lot of differences between the two denominations. Some of these are:
Head of the Church:
The Catholics recognise the Pope as the head of the Catholic Church due to the fact that they believe that the ‘Papal Supremacy Doctrine’ was created by Jesus, this doctrine establishes that Peter (the first pope chosen by God), had immense power to shape the Catholic Church but had to pass on the reign.
Orthodox recognise the Patriarch of Constantinople as the head of the Orthodox Church due to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, created by Emperor Constantine when changing of the capital of the Roman Empire from Rome to Constantinople this is a group of the highest people in orthodox culture, and the leader of this group is the Patriarchate of Orthodoxy.
Holy Item:
The Catholics praise the crucifix as their holy item. The crucifix represents how Jesus died on the cross to save us from sin.
The Orthodox have many icons of Jesus, Mary and the Saints, they represent the significance to the orthodox in church.
Celibacy:
The Catholics have made it a law that every Bishop, Monk and Priest must be celibate, this means that they must not be married whilst being a bishop, priest or monk.
The Orthodox have it similar with bishops, monks though their priest are allowed to marry whilst completing their duties.
Language of Mass:
In the Catholic church today, mass is usually in English, but in the early stages of the Catholic Church, mass was usually held in Latin, this was due to the fact that Latin was the language that was spoken by the majority of the Catholics.
In the Orthodox church today, mass is spoken in English, with parts of it in Greek, but in the early stages of Orthodoxy, mass was all in Greek, as majority of the Orthodox society spoke Greek.
These are just some ways that the Catholics and Orthodox Churches are different and how they cause conflict due to these differences
